Things To Do
When visiting Malone, be sure to try out some of our local attractions:
The Malone Golf Club
Our most popular summer destination is our Malone Golf Club, designed by Robert Trent Jones and the formerly managed by the current PGA Vice President, Derek Sprague. The club has accommodated golfers for over 20 years. www.malonegolfclub.com
Titus Mountain Family Ski Center
Not far beyond the Malone Golf Club is the Titus Mountain Family Ski Center. Offering over 50 trails and glades for both beginners and experts, this three mountain resort is a treat in the winter season. It is located only ten minutes from Kilburn Manor and recently became a part of the Empire State Winter Games’ venues. The mountain offers tubing, a learning center, an onsite sugar house, and two lodges with meal services. www.titusmountain.com
For the Cross Country skier trails are also minutes away. https://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/353.html
The nearby Wilder Farmstead (a.k.a Farmer Boy museum) draws visitors world-wide who come to explore the 84-acre living museum/homestead. It is the boyhood home of Almanzo Wilder, described in Farmer Boy, by Wilder’s wife Laura Ingalls Wilder in the Little House on the Prairie book series. It was recently honored as the first of all the Little House Museums as a National Literary Landmark in 2015. https://almanzowilderfarm.com/
Other things to do in Malone
Kilburn Manor’s neighbor on the left, The Franklin County House of History, is both a haven for genealogical research as well as a most charming 1864 Tuscan-style museum. Here one can learn about Malone’s past, including the British invasion during the War of 1812 and Malone’s era as a thriving center of industry and transportation. www.franklinhistory.org
The First Congregational Church, located at the corner of our street, is a designated historic site on the State of New York’s Underground Railroad Heritage Trail. One of the small tunnels used by fugitive slaves is still intact. Of note, Vice President William A. Wheeler was a prominent member of the congregation. The organ of this Norman Romanesque style church is most impressive as are the splendid array of its architectural features including some exquisite stain glass windows.
Our guests often stroll or bike Malone’s neighborhoods, enjoying many wonderful architectural examples. Some of our Victorian homes are called “Painted Ladies” because of their bright combinations of paint and gold leaf that bedeck porches, spires, and other beautiful architectural embellishments.
A visit to Morningside Cemetery, reveals the grave site of William Almon Wheeler who served as Vice President of the United States under Rutherford Hayes. Also buried there is the famous guitar maker, Orville Gibson. An elaborate family plot owned by the Horton family, industrialists and the original owners of what is now called Kilburn Manor is also located there. We named Kilburn Manor after US Congressman Kilburn whose family resided here for several decades after the Horton occupancy.
The Akwesasne Mohawk Casino is a half-hour’s drive. See www.mohawkcasino.com 518-358-2222
